Toro 21462
Engine oil for the Toro 21462
Short answer
The same three oil numbers on every 21462 listing that names accessories. Your serial does not change the oil on this machine — it changes the chute.

What decides it
The numbers that matter here
- Serial range
Does not affect the oil on this machine
Worth stating plainly, because on four other machines this site holds it does. Here the same three numbers run through every listing that names accessories, so you can buy oil without finding your serial.
- Grade
SAE 30 (38903, 38916) or full synthetic 10W-30 (138-6053)
Toro lists both grades side by side and says nothing about choosing between them. SAE 30 is a mono-grade for warm running and 10W-30 a multi-grade; which suits your climate is an engine-manual question.
- Bottle size
32 oz (38903) or 18 oz (38916), same grade
A quantity decision rather than a fitment one. With no published sump capacity, neither bottle is “an oil change” until you have checked the manual.
- The newest listing is empty
From 420000000, no accessory list at all
If your machine is recent and Toro’s page shows you no oil, this is why. The listing names no accessories of any kind, and the run below it names all three oils.
In detail
Choosing engine oil for this mower
This is a short answer and the shortness is the point: on the 21462, oil does not depend on your serial at all.
Every listing that names accessories names the same three numbers — 38903, SAE 30 in a 32 oz bottle; 38916, the same grade in 18 oz; and 138-6053, the full synthetic 10W-30. Not one of them enters or leaves at any serial. The 20334, 21199, 21199HD and 21200 all move the synthetic from 117-0066 to 138-6053 at some point in their production; the 21462 never names the older number at all, on any listing we have opened for it.
Where your serial does matter on this machine is the discharge chute, and that is the only place. 139-6556 and 147-8696 both appear across these listings, and the runs that name each are what the serial-range pages under this model set out. Nothing else on the 21462 varies from one listing to the next.
One listing is worth knowing about before you go looking. The newest run, from 420000000 with no upper serial, **publishes no accessory list at all** — so an owner of a current 21462 finds no oil number on Toro’s page for their machine, and that is a fact about the page rather than about the mower. The run directly below it names all three.
Toro publishes no sump capacity here, so how much oil the engine takes is a question for the engine manual.
The mistake we see most
Method
How we established this
We opened all nine listings Toro publishes for model 21462 and recorded which oil numbers each names. All but the newest carry an accessory list; that one carries none. The comparison with the machines that do change synthetic comes from those models’ own matrices.

The answer is not the same on every machine, which is the point of checking rather than assuming.

Toro publishes this listing for the model and serial range, and it carries no accessory list at all — assembly drawings, a downloadable parts catalog and manuals only. We opened it and there is nothing on it to record, which is why no fitment on this site is scoped to this range. That is different from a part being absent from a list: this page makes no statement about any part.

SAE 30 4-Cycle Lawn Mower Engine Oil 32 oz (Part # 38903)
The Toro Company · Primary source · Accessed August 29, 2026
The number requested, answered without a redirect and with no “Replaces Product” line in either direction. Toro describes it as a mono-grade fluid for high-temperature use and states it “meets or exceeds performance requirements of all OEM products (Toro®, Briggs & Stratton®, Kohler®, Honda® and Tecumseh®)”. It names engine makes and no machine, model or engine number, so it establishes the product and not the fitment.

SAE 30 4-Cycle Summer Engine Oil 18 oz. (Part # 38916)
The Toro Company · Primary source · Accessed August 29, 2026
The number requested, no redirect and no “Replaces Product” line. Same mono-grade SAE 30 description as 38903 and the same list of engine makes, in an 18 oz. bottle rather than 32 oz. The page is marked “Not Available Online”, which is a statement about Toro’s own checkout and not about whether the oil is listed for a machine. This is the bottle kit 20298 itemizes.

OIL-30/10W-30 SYNTHETIC CK4 [QT] (Part # 138-6053)
The Toro Company · Primary source · Accessed August 28, 2026
The same page served at its own number, and it is the same page carrying that one “Replaces Product 117-0066” line — so Toro states the supersession once and either number reaches it, which is not the same as stating it from both directions. This page is now also the source for part 138-6053 itself: batch 13 created the pt_engine_oil category, so the clause that used to sit here — that engine oil is in no category this site records — stopped being true the moment that batch was staged.
