Toro 20340

Engine oil for the Toro 20340

Short answer

Toro lists no engine oil for a 20340 below serial 404330000. From there it lists three numbers, and never moves the synthetic to its newer number.

What we have verified

What decides it

The numbers that matter here

Serial range

No oil listed below 404330000; three numbers above it

Check this first, and do not carry 400000000 across from another Toro. Three of this machine’s listings name no oil whatsoever, so finding nothing for an early serial is the expected result.

Which synthetic

117-0066 on both listings that name oil — there is no second one

The 20340 is never moved to 138-6053. If you are comparing against a machine that lists the newer number, the difference is real rather than a gap in this record.

Grade and bottle size

SAE 30 32 oz (38903) or 18 oz (38916), on both

Neither depends on your serial once oil is listed at all. The two are one grade in two quantities, and with no published sump capacity neither is “an oil change” until you have read the manual.

An open-ended listing

The newest run, 404330000 upward, has no upper serial

It covers everything built since, which is why the *OBS* number standing on it is worth knowing rather than an artefact of an old page.

In detail

Choosing engine oil for this mower

Two things about oil on the 20340 look like they should follow a rule, and neither does.

The first is where Toro starts listing it. Of the five listings published for this model, the three oldest name no engine oil at all and the two newest name three numbers each. The change is at 404330000. On the 20334 and the 20339 the same thing happens at 400000000 — so “oil appears from 400000000” looks like a family rule until this machine, where it is more than four million serials later. There is no catalogue-wide date here to lean on, only what each listing says.

That serial is not an oil serial, though. Six other unrelated numbers arrive with the three oils at 404330000 — a front wheel, a cover, a mesh bag, a grass bag and two fuel treatments — and none of them leaves again. What starts there is the accessory list, not the oil. The three older listings are thin rather than telling you something about early machines, and this page treats 404330000 as the edge of what Toro publishes rather than as a change to the mower.

The second is which synthetic. The two listings that name oil name 117-0066, the full synthetic 10W-30 Toro prints *OBS* against, and they never move to 138-6053. The newest run has no upper serial, so it covers current machines and still names the obsolete number. That matches the 20339 and not the four machines where the change does happen — which land at four different serials of their own.

Under all that, nothing moves. 38903 is SAE 30 in 32 oz and 38916 the same grade in 18 oz, and both are on both listings that name oil. Once you are above 404330000 no oil number on this machine depends on your serial.

Toro publishes no sump capacity, so how much the engine takes is an engine-manual question rather than one this page can answer.

The mistake we see most

Carrying “oil starts at 400000000” over from another machine in this family. On the 20340 it starts at 404330000, and three listings below that name none.

Method

How we established this

We opened all five listings Toro publishes for model 20340 and recorded which oil numbers each names, then opened the product pages for the three it names. The serials quoted for the 20334 and the 20339 come from those models’ own matrices, read the same way.

The answer is not the same on every machine, which is the point of checking rather than assuming.

    SAE 30 4-Cycle Lawn Mower Engine Oil 32 oz (Part # 38903)

The Toro Company · Primary source · Accessed August 29, 2026

The number requested, answered without a redirect and with no “Replaces Product” line in either direction. Toro describes it as a mono-grade fluid for high-temperature use and states it “meets or exceeds performance requirements of all OEM products (Toro®, Briggs & Stratton®, Kohler®, Honda® and Tecumseh®)”. It names engine makes and no machine, model or engine number, so it establishes the product and not the fitment.

    SAE 30 4-Cycle Summer Engine Oil 18 oz. (Part # 38916)

The Toro Company · Primary source · Accessed August 29, 2026

The number requested, no redirect and no “Replaces Product” line. Same mono-grade SAE 30 description as 38903 and the same list of engine makes, in an 18 oz. bottle rather than 32 oz. The page is marked “Not Available Online”, which is a statement about Toro’s own checkout and not about whether the oil is listed for a machine. This is the bottle kit 20298 itemizes.

    OIL-30/10W-30 SYNTHETIC CK4 [QT] (Part # 138-6053), served at /product/117-0066

The Toro Company · Primary source · Accessed September 5, 2026

Requesting the 117-0066 product URL serves the page for 138-6053 under the line “Replaces Product 117-0066”, which is Toro stating the oil supersession directly rather than this site inferring it from which number sits against which serial range. Re-read 31 August 2026 and unchanged, and again 5 September 2026. Internal designation OIL-30/10W-30 SYNTHETIC CK4 [QT]. One bullet frames the oil for zero-turn riding mowers (TimeCutter MX, Titan, Titan MX) while the overview calls it the choice for any outdoor power equipment; the page names no walk-behind model. It does state a capacity — the title reads “(32 oz.)” and the first bullet repeats “10W-30 engine oil (32 oz.)” — corrected 5 September 2026 from an earlier reading that missed it.
