It depends on your serial number, and the cut-off is earlier than on Toro’s other 22 in. mowers. Toro lists kit 20234 for serial range 315000001–315999999, and kit 130-8148 for both of the later ranges we opened: 316000001–316999999 and 400000000–401999999.

315-series takes 20234; the 316- and 400-series listings both show 130-8148

This is the entire decision, and the boundary is one range earlier than on the 20340 and 20339. We opened three of the fourteen listings, so we cannot tell you what the other eleven show.

Do not reuse another model’s rule

The 20340 and 20339 change kit at 316 → 400, not 315 → 316

In detail

Choosing engine maintenance kits for this mower

If you have read anywhere that the Toro maintenance-kit change happens "in the 400 series", that is true of some machines and wrong about this one. On the 20334 the kit has already changed a full range earlier. Toro lists 20234, the Engine Maintenance Kit for Briggs & Stratton Engine, for serial range 315000001–315999999. By 316000001–316999999 the listing shows 130-8148, the Briggs & Stratton EXi Engine Maintenance Kit Replacement, and it is still 130-8148 in the 400000000–401999999 range.

That matters because the 20340 and the 20339 — same manufacturer, same 22 in. deck, same engine displacement — change kit between the 316 and 400 ranges instead. So a person with three Toro mowers in the same shed would find three machines that look alike and two different rules. There is no rule. There is only the number stamped on your machine.

Toro publishes fourteen separate parts listings for the model number 20334. We have opened three of them. If your serial number falls outside 315000001–401999999, we have not verified which kit Toro lists for you, and we would rather say so than let a page imply otherwise.

One more thing we are not going to tell you: whether either kit substitutes for the other. The word "Replacement" in the name of 130-8148 invites that reading, and it may be right. But Toro presents the two as the kits for different serial ranges, not as a supersession, and we have found no primary source that says one replaces the other.

The mistake we see most

Learning the "check for the 400 series" rule from a Toro 20340 and applying it to a 20334. On this machine the kit has already changed by then.

How we established this

We opened Toro’s own parts listings for model 20334 under serial ranges 315000001–315999999, 316000001–316999999 and 400000000–401999999, and recorded which maintenance kit appears in each. The count of fourteen ranges is read off the range selector on those pages. Where a kit is absent from a range we record the fitment as unknown, not incompatible — absence from a parts page is not a statement that a part does not fit.
